The School of Education offers certificate, bachelor’s, and master’s degree programs in an array of areas, including early childhood education, early childhood special education, educational leadership, elementary education, language education, secondary education, speech-language pathology, and teaching and learning. All programs encompass innovative instruction, research, service, and leadership.
Master of Education, Educational Leadership
The Master of Education in Educational Leadership program is intended for those seeking advanced professional education to pursue school leadership positions. The program is specifically for students pursuing a Type B Administrative Certificate. The program requires the completion of 35 credit hours and all the courses are web based. The requirements include foundation core, research foundation, and principal core courses. The courses include orientation to graduate studies in leadership, leadership in Alaska culture and social justice issues, fundamentals of research in education, data-informed instruction and decision making, organizational theory and change, instructional leadership and student learning, politics, law and ethics in leadership, school resource allocation and management, principal seminar, and principal internship. Students have the ability to meet with the instructors at pre-determined weekly times within the Blackboard Online Platform. The Master of Education in Educational Leadership program meets Alaska licensure requirements and prepares graduates to pursue principal and leadership careers in education.

The School of Education at the University of Alaska Southeast offers programs that are intended to meet the needs of current and aspiring educators. It boasts a strong tradition for high quality programs that produce excellent educational professionals who demonstrate a dedication to making a difference in the lives of students. The School of Education offers both undergraduate and graduate programs in various areas including elementary education, special education, secondary and middle grades education, educational leadership, reading specialist, mathematics education, educational technology, distance teaching and e-learning, K-8 education, and superintendent.
M.Ed. Educational Leadership
The M.Ed. in Educational Leadership is a cohort program intended to prepare students to pursue school administrators in Alaska. All students progress through the courses together. The program prepares students for the opportunities and challenges intrinsic in pursuing leadership roles in public education. The curriculum is a blend of face-to-face and e-learning components. The program requires the completion of 36 credit hours. The core courses include introduction to educational leadership, educational research, curriculum and instructional leadership, educational leadership, superintendent, and master’s research project or portfolio. The courses include case studies, guest speakers, and in-depth study of various concepts. The program also includes summer intensive learning sessions and on-site internships. Students are able to complete the program in one year and pursue the necessary steps to become Certified Educational Administrators.
