Educational Leadership Degree Programs in Maryland (A-M)
Educational leadership degree programs provide current teaching professionals and aspiring leaders in education with all of the practical skills and knowledge that they will need for positions in their chosen fields. Qualified educational leaders are needed by a variety of facilities to lead educational boards and committees, direct college and university departments, improve school effectiveness, and provide leadership to teaching staff.
Persons who are interested in obtaining careers in educational leadership will need to earn a minimum of a master’s degree in educational leadership (or similar area) from an accredited four-year college or university. Bowie State University
College of Education
The College of Education at Bowie State University dates back to the year 1925. At this time, it offered just one two-year program: Teacher Education. Today, the college is made up of three distinct departments (Counseling, Educational Leadership, and Teaching) that provide a large variety of programs for persons who are interested in educational occupations. Within the Department of Educational Leadership, students can choose from three areas of study: educational leadership, elementary and secondary school administration, or administrator certification.
Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership
The Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership degree program offered by Bowie State University’s College of Education is geared towards those persons who have experience working in leadership positions on the K-12th grade levels. To fulfill the requirements of this program, students will need to complete 60 credit hours of coursework as well as a comprehensive research project. This is a highly rigorous program that is conducted by way of a cohort model (students attend each required course concurrently), and students typically complete all requirements within about seven years.

Coppin State University
College of Arts & Sciences, and Education
Coppin State University’s College of Arts & Sciences, and Education consists of five departments within two separate schools: the School of Education, and the School of Arts & Sciences. The college’s School of Education provides both graduate and undergraduate programs that are designed to prepare aspiring and current educators for exciting careers in their fields of interest. Areas of study that are presently offered by the School of Education include elementary education, early childhood education, adult and continuing education, curriculum and instruction, and contemporary educational leadership.
Master of Education in Contemporary Educational Leadership
The Master of Education in Contemporary Educational Leadership degree program offered by Coppin State University’s School of Education requires students to complete 33 credit hours of intensive coursework. This coursework is divided into two distinct categories: core program-related requirements and leadership-related requirements. Samples of the current core program-related and leadership-related course requirements include Strategies for Curriculum Development, Administration of Education Programs, School Law, Supervision of Instruction, and Critical Issues in Contemporary Educational Leadership.

Frostburg State University
College of Education
Frostburg State University’s College of Education is comprised of two separate departments: the Department of Kinesiology and Recreation, and the Department of Educational Professions. As of 2018, the college offers more than a dozen programs leading to bachelor, master, and doctor degrees. Within the realm of education, students can choose among programs in such areas of interest as health and physical education, elementary or secondary teaching, literacy education, curriculum and instruction, early childhood education, and educational leadership.
Doctor of Education-Educational Leadership (Ed.D.)
Persons who would like to enroll in Frostburg State University’s Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership degree program can choose from four different areas of specialization: pre-k through 12th grade leadership, higher education leadership, educational instructional technology, or curriculum and instruction. This is a 60-credit-hour program that consists of 33 credits of educational leadership coursework, nine credits of coursework in the student’s chosen area of specialty, a doctoral practicum (worth six credits total), and a dissertation (worth 12 credits).

Hood College
Department of Education
The main goal of Hood College’s Department of Education is to prepare students to facilitate learning in culturally diverse and ever-changing learning environments. There are nearly a dozen programs offered by the department on both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Areas of study as of the year 2018 include secondary education, special education, early childhood education, reading specialization, curriculum and instruction, elementary STEM education, and educational leadership.
Educational Leadership M.S.
The Department of Education’s Educational Leadership M.S. degree program is a 36-credit-hour program designed for certified teachers who are looking to become leaders in their professions. To enroll in this program, prospective students will need to complete an online admissions application, submit a copy of their official college/university transcripts, submit one professional letter of recommendation, submit a brief writing sample, and attend an admissions interview. Applicants should also have at least five years of teaching experience to enter into the program.

McDaniel College
The Department of Grad Programs
McDaniel College’s Department of Grad Programs offers more than 20 graduate-level programs to help students meet their educational and occupational goals. The department provides training in a broad range of fields including writing for children and young adults, liberal arts, human services, human resources, gerontology, and data analytics. Within the field of education, students will find a variety of programs in such areas as elementary education, curriculum and instruction, deaf education, kinesiology, gifted and talented education, and educational leadership.
Master of Science in Educational Leadership
The Master of Science in Educational Leadership degree program offered by McDaniel College’s Department of Grad Programs is geared towards certified teachers who wish to become educational administrators. Small classroom sizes and flexible scheduling allow for individualized attention. Students enrolled in this program will need to complete 34 credit hours of coursework as well as a developmental portfolio and a final program-related project. To be eligible for the program, applicants must have an overall GPA of 3.0, must have earned a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, and must submit three professional letters of recommendation.

Morgan State University
The School of Education and Urban Studies
The School of Education and Urban Studies at Morgan State University consists of three departments: Family and Consumer Sciences; Advanced Studies, Leadership, and Policy; and Teacher Education and Professional Development. Within the Department of Teacher Education and Professional Development, the school offers nine superb programs. Currently, these programs cover the following subject areas: science education, math education, higher education, community college leadership, community college administration and instruction, higher education and student affairs administration, and urban educational leadership.
Urban Educational Leadership (EdD)
The goal of the Urban Educational Leadership EdD program offered by Morgan State University’s School of Education and Urban Studies is to prepare doctoral students for leadership positions in urban school systems or other educational facilities. Admission to the program requires that applicants possess a master’s degree from an accredited institution, have an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher, and attend an interview with the graduate admissions committee. To fulfill the requirements of the program, students must complete 66 credit hours of program-related coursework, a comprehensive dissertation, and a residency approved by the educational leadership committee.

Mount St. Mary’s University
Graduate Programs
The Department of Graduate Programs located within Mount St. Mary’s University offers nearly two dozen outstanding programs for persons seeking graduate certificates or degrees. For the convenience of working students, courses are conducted in five-week sessions rather than the traditional 16-week sessions that are common for most other higher education facilities. Examples of some of the subject areas offered by the Department of Graduate Programs in Mount St. Mary’s University include philosophical studies, business administration, health administration, sports management, biotechnology, and instructional leadership.
Master of Education in Instructional Leadership
The Department of Graduate Program’s Master of Education in Instructional Leadership degree program is designed for those students who are current educational professionals who would like to obtain administrative certification. Persons who are interested in enrolling in this program need to have an average GPA of at least 2.75, and must have a current teaching certification. To finish the program and earn their degrees, students are required to complete such courses as Current Trends in Education, Strategic Planning and Leadership, Managing School Finances, and Educational Policy and School Law.
