Established in 1896, Adelphi University is a private university in Garden City. Though its early roots included serving as a prep school for future college students, it would later become Adelphi College before earning university status. U.S. News and World Report ranked Adelphi at number 146 on a list of the best colleges. The university has a suburban campus with more than 70 acres of land open for students and an enrollment of more than 7,800 students.
M.A. in Educational Leadership

As a hybrid program, it gives students the chance to continue working as teachers and in other jobs as they finish their degrees. To go along with the degree program, the university offers an advanced certificate for school district leaders. The educational leadership program is also available for certificate students. Those in the full degree program will take seven foundation courses that include Comp Based Tech in ED, Ethics, Law and Technology, School Leadership and Research and Evaluation in Schools. Students who maintain a GPA of at least 3.0 and pass the state’s certification exam can become licensed leaders. Instead of requiring a thesis, this program has an internship. Brooklyn College CUNY
Department of School Psychology, Counseling & Leadership
Brooklyn College has a long history of helping students become teachers because it started as the City College for Teachers. Opened in 1930, the college served as an extension branch of a large school by the same name. The state combined two campuses in Brooklyn that served as a men’s college and a women’s college into one school that would offer educational opportunities for both sexes. It would later establish a Division of Graduate Studies and add more graduate programs to its curriculum. Brooklyn College is now part of the City University of New York (CUNY) system.
M.S. in Education in Educational Leadership
The educational leadership program offered by Brooklyn College awards graduates a Master of Science in Education. Students can start in the spring or the fall. Brooklyn has a rolling admissions policy and will accept new students until it no longer has space in the program. As one of the top accredited educational leadership degree programs in New York, it also accepts transfer students and allows them to bring their credits into the program. School and Community Relations is a required course that teaches students how educators can work with the community at large to benefit both their schools and their students. Canisius College
School of Education & Human Services
Canisius College is one of just a few colleges established by the Society of Jesuits. Founded in 1870, the college retains its affiliations with both the Society of Jesuits and the Roman Catholic Church. U.S. News and World Report included Canisius on its list of the best regional colleges in the American north and ranked it at number 22nd on that list. The college appeared on the publication’s list of the best value colleges too. Canisius is a small private college in Buffalo that has an enrollment of more than 2,300 undergrad students and more than 1,000 post-graduate and graduate students.
Master’s in Educational Leadership & Supervision
The School of Education at Canisius College offers a graduate degree program in educational leadership and supervision. This program makes it easy for students to earn their New York State School Builder Leader licenses or their New York State School District Leader licenses and also helps them earn their degrees. Those who graduate from the program can transition into the college’s doctoral program in educational leadership too. Depending on the licenses that they want to obtain, students will take different courses. Some of the courses that both versions of the program offer include School Business Administration, Theory in Educational Administration, School Personnel Administration and Instructional Program Design. D’Youville College
School of Arts, Sciences and Education
Established in 1908, D’Youville College is a private college in Buffalo affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church. The Sisters of Grey founded the college and chose its name as a way to honor the saint of the same name. During its early years, D’Youville served as a college for women and was the only school in the state that offered bachelor’s degree programs for young women. It did not become coeducational until the 1970s, but the college still has a higher ratio of female students to males. More than 3,000 students now live and take classes on the college’s campus.
Educational Leadership EdD
Though students have many different choices when it comes to accredited educational leadership degree programs in New York, some like the small size of the classes at D’Youville College. The educational leadership program it offers is a doctoral program designed for those who have an understanding of complex educational terms and some leadership experience. This program focuses heavily on research and gives students opportunities to conduct their own research and to present their work. Not only can they present that work in their classes, but they will present their final research projects to the college and department heads. They can also do fieldwork and internships. The college prepares students to work in private and public settings with children in kindergarten through high school. This is one of the only programs in the state that prepares students for working in higher education too, including vocational schools and community colleges.

Fordham University
Graduate School of Education
Fordham University is one of several colleges in New York affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church. Established in 1841, it is the oldest university in the region affiliated with that Church. Fordham is also the only Catholic university in NYC and ranks as one of the state’s oldest institutes of higher learning. The university now owns three campuses in the state that offer opportunities for students who want to live in or close to NYC and those who live in and around Westchester. Fordham saw its enrollment grow significantly over the years to reach a high of more than 15,000 today.
Educational Leadership MSE
To help students develop the skills and gain all the experience that they need in educational positions, Fordham University now offers two accredited educational leadership degree programs in New York. The first of those is a Master of Science in Education with an emphasis on educational leadership. Designed for those who want to work as principals and in similar positions, it features 30 credits. Students will get credit for their fieldwork and can work part-time in the same schools where they currently work. They will need to do at least 440 hours of fieldwork to gain credit for their internships. The university offers this program for both full-time and part-time students on its Lincoln Center campus. It includes courses such as Critical Issues in Administration and Supervision, Leading in a Diverse Society, School Finance, School Law, Fundamentals of Educational Supervision and Instructional Leadership as well as a comprehensive final exam.
Educational Leadership, Administration, and Policy EdD
Another program offered by Fordham University is an education doctoral program in educational leadership, administration and policy. This program helps students advance their careers as they work in K-12 institutions. It is available both online and as a traditional program on the university’s Westchester and Lincoln Center campuses. Students will take and finish four labs that look at different areas of educational leadership over their first two years in the program. Each lab will include a practicum with some fieldwork in areas such as organizational learning and change and professional learning. In the third year of the program, students will start working on their dissertations after getting approval from their advisors. Fordham expects students to present their dissertations and show that they used research and writing skills they developed in the program to complete that work. The program also features multiple seminars on leadership, organizational change and similar subjects.

Hunter College CUNY
School of Education
Many different campuses in and around NYC make up the CUNY system, including Hunter College. This college has its main campus on the Upper East Side in the small neighborhood of Lenox Hill. It operates both an elementary school and a high school that offer learning opportunities for education majors. Those majors can do their internships in the schools, though they have the choice to work in other districts too. Though Hunter has a few satellite campuses in other parts of the city, those campuses house other departments and divisions. All the campuses combined have an enrollment of more than 22,000 students.
Master’s in Educational Leadership
Though Hunter College is smaller than other campuses, it offers the same opportunities for students looking at accredited educational leadership degree programs in New York as those large campuses do. This program helps students finish an educational leadership degree and meet the qualifications for getting different licenses from the state. Students must complete 32 credits of work over four semesters. This is a cohort program that requires they take classes once a week on the Hunter campus. The day of the week in which classes meet changes between semesters. Hunter requires that students take seminars and do papers in those courses based on the theme of the semester. The program also includes Leadership for School Reform, Leadership to Enhance Human Resources, School District Leadership: Problems and Issues among other classes. Before they can graduate, students must take an assessment required by the state and complete a workshop offered by the university.

Lehman College CUNY
School of Education
One of the only senior colleges in the CUNY system is Lehman College. As a senior college, it offers classes for graduate students and undergrad students who completed at least two years of classes. Established in 1967 as the Bronx Branch of Hunter College, its campus has a long history. It served as both a training center for the Navy and as a meeting space for the United Nations. Hunter College would later use the campus as a satellite branch before the state decided to open the campus as a brand new college. Lehman College is a comprehensive college with a liberal arts focus.
Educational Leadership, Master of Science in Education
Like other accredited educational leadership degree programs in New York, the Lehman College program features 30 credits of work that students do after finish a bachelor’s degree. Students typically finish the program in five semesters, which include a summer session between their first and second years. The college provides incoming students with a worksheet to help them see the courses they need to take and pairs them with advisors to help them register for classes each semester. The Leadership Experience is a required class that students take in their final semesters. It asks them to take a seminar at the same time that they do an internship. Many of the other classes in the program ask students to do at least six hours of fieldwork too. Those courses include Creating Effective and Supportive Learning Environments for All Students, Legal and Economic Issues and the Administration of Schools and Case Studies in School Building Leadership.
