Educational Leadership Degree Programs in Oregon

Education and improving Oregon’s education system is a high priority in Oregon, and offering educational leadership degree programs in Oregon is one of several paths towards providing students with high-quality education and highly trained educational leaders. In 2015, Oregon’s graduation ranked third worst in the country according to the U.S. Department of Education. The state’s education system ranked 43rd in the national in terms of overall performance. Lack of funding played a large role in the state’s education problems. Funding is not something the education system can change. Providing the schools with good educational leaders is something they can and are attempting to do by offering educational leadership degree programs in Oregon.

Graduate School of Education and Counseling

The Graduate School of Education and Counseling offers various programs aimed at preparing students for positions of leadership in educational settings. The programs teach students how to collaborate with school staff, parents and the community; delegate leadership duties to initiate systemic change; advocate for students and make school-improvement decisions based on data analysis.

Graduates of these programs go on to become principals, assistant principals, district office administrators in K-12 schools, program coordinators, student affairs professionals and school counselors. The curriculums, which are both practice and theory, are constantly updated to keep up with educational trends and needs. Faculty members are professionals and highly-educated leaders with extensive experience in their field.

Master of Education with Preliminary Administrator License in Educational Leadership

The Master of Education with Preliminary Administrator License in Educational Leadership, a graduate program requiring completion of 38 semester hours, is offered as an on-campus or off-campus program. It’s aimed at candidates currently working as program leaders or licensed teachers but who do not possess a master’s degree. The program needs students who want to create change to improve student learning. Participants in the program learn how to be supportive with students, teachers and parents through action leadership.

Students who may have taken graduate level courses at other colleges may transfer them into this program. This is a flexible program that allows students to enroll in any semester and also allows them to complete it at their own pace by taking by day, night or summer classes. In addition to coursework, students in the administrator licensing program complete a practicum course, which provides them on-the-job, in-depth training working in a leadership role. Students have the benefit of small class sizes and flexible learning schedules.

Educational Specialist in Educational Leadership

The Educational Specialist in Educational Leadership program is another flexible program that allows students to take classes in the evenings, on the weekends or during the summer. Applicants also have the option of starting in January, June or September. This 37-semester hour program can be complete in five years. This advanced degree program allows students to earn a post-master’s degree without having to complete a doctorate.

It’s aimed at individuals who have master’s degrees who are hoping to obtain licensure as Oregon Preliminary and Professional Administrators. Candidates who are already licensed Oregon teachers can obtain both administrative licenses within six years. Graduates of this program have the decision-making and leadership skills needed to work in the highest level of leadership in the education system.
