The College of Education and Social Services is dedicated to educating and preparing excellent professionals to pursue careers in education, human services and social work. Its efforts are intended to promote a more humane and fair society that helps individuals, families, and communities live higher quality lives and reach their maximum potential. The College of Education and Social Services offers accredited educational leadership degree programs in Vermont. It also offers programs in American Sign Language, art education, social work, special education, sport management, gerontology, elementary education, middle level education, secondary education, physical education, human development and family studies, counseling, and coaching.
Educational Leadership and Policy Studies Ed.D.
The Educational Leadership and Policy Studies Ed. D is designed around issues of equity and social justice and resolutions to complicated issues of practice. The curriculum is organized around five major themes including: organizational theory, change, and leadership, critical perspectives, learning and development, policy study and analysis, and process of inquiry/applied research and utilization of knowledge. Students are able to select from various concentration areas: educational leadership PreK-12, special education leadership, social service and nonprofit leadership, policy leadership, and higher education leadership. At least 59 semester credit hours are required to complete the program, including core courses, concentration courses, research courses, and dissertation research. The core courses include: Social Processes, Organizational Leadership, and Policy Seminar. Students must also receive a passing score on a comprehensive examination. Graduates are prepared to pursue leadership positions in PreK-16 settings, government organizations, social service and nonprofit agencies, and teaching and research at the college level.
Educational Leadership and Policy Studies Ph.D.
The PhD program is Educational Leadership and Policy Studies is a multidisciplinary degree that investigates complex educational and social issues through the incorporation of various theoretical, methodological and disciplinary points of view. The program is designed to prepare students to attain an advanced level of scholarly knowhow in the education field. Students are able to concentrate in educational leadership and policy studies, social policy, curriculum and instructional leadership, and higher education leadership. The program requires the completion of at least 75 semester credit hours, including core courses, research, concentration courses, transdisciplinary field of study, seminar, and dissertation research. The core courses include Social Processes, Organizational Leadership, and Policy Seminar. Students must also gain appropriate teaching experience and pass a comprehensive examination. Graduates of the program are prepared to pursue teaching and research careers in academic and research and policy jobs in public, private, and government organizations.
