Because they do not have to adhere to state or national standards, they can make unconventional hiring choices. Their looser standards mean that they do not pay as much as public schools do. Some people stick with private school jobs just long enough to get the experience that will result in a public school job. Others find the private school environment freeing and invigorating. Lots of people work at private schools while completing their master’s degrees, after which they begin to look within the public school system.
