Every student has different goals in mind after completing a college education program, and some of those students might find themselves more interested in the government agencies that hire teachers than working for public or private schools. These agencies know that education students know the ins and outs of working with students, but those students also gain a number of other useful skills, including learning how to present themselves and understanding how to present information to others. With your education degree, you might prefer working in the government in some capacity.
Federal Bureau of Investigations
The Federal Bureau of Investigations, better known as the FBI, is a government agency concerned with the security and rights of citizens. FBI agents typically need to pass a series of physical fitness tests that also test their hearing and vision, but they also need to go through a background check and have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree. A degree in education can qualify you to work as a special agent or field agent. The Department of Homeland Security, Central Intelligence Agency and other security agencies also hire teachers.
Department of Defense
Did you know that you can turn your education degree into a job with the Department of Defense? Though many people think this agency only operates out of Washington DC, it actually has field offices located in major cities across the country. The Department of Defense uses education graduates to present information to the public and to lead training sessions with other workers. The presentation skills that you develop as a college student and the field experience that you have in the classroom can help you do well with jobs in the Department of Defense.
Child Protective Services
One of the government agencies that hire teachers is Child Protective Services. Also known as CPS, this is an agency that looks into claims of child abuse, child neglect and other crimes. CPS workers are usually social work majors, but your degree in education qualifies you to work as an assistant, a teacher or in another capacity. Social workers meet with parents to talk about claims and talk with children. They work hard to make everyone involved feel more comfortable, but they also look out for the best interests of the children involved in each case. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, social workers make a median wage of $44,200 a year and that the job outlook for this field is high.
Department of Education
If you want to use your education degree in an advocacy capacity, you might look at the jobs available with the Department of Education. As one of the top government agencies that hire teachers, this department needs teachers who can bring change to the overall educational system in America. You’ll have the chance to work on new guidelines that teachers must follow and with the requirements that new teachers must meet. The Department of Education also creates new programs for public schools in the country.
