Literacy educators could benefit from reading one or all of these five blogs for reading teachers. No matter what grade a teacher teaches, each of these blogs could prove to be helpful. Each of these five blogs for reading teachers has a slightly different area of focus and range of features.
A Year of Reading
A Year of Reading is a blog featuring teachers’ reviews of books for children. Many teachers keep their classrooms well-stocked with books for children to read. School librarians are also on the lookout for new books to add to their collections. In A Year of Reading, the authors Franki Sibberson and Mary Lee Hahn review newly-published books for kids. Their focus is on how a book could be used within the classroom.
Burkins and Yaris
The Burkins and Yaris blog is about literacy. It encompasses both reading and writing. The authors have a specific interest in children’s literature, but their blog also includes non-fiction, poetry, short stories and more. The topics on reading and writing include reading levels, different voices in writing and how to encourage creative writing in the classroom. It encompasses preschool to high school reading levels. This blog has not been updated in a while, but it does have some helpful tidbits for teachers.
Literacy Beat
The Literacy Beat blog focuses on digital literacy for children and adults. It is a good one for a reading teacher to read because it helps teachers figure out how much work their assignments really are for their students. The blog has different sections for literacy in a range of disciplines, including technology, entertainment, visual arts, music, science, math and engineering. The blog has six authors who each have a different area of focus for their posts. This blog has not been updated in a few years, but it does contain plenty of information for reading teachers with a focus on older learners.
Nerdy Book Club
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, literacy teachers should be resourceful in how they teach and able to adapt to different types of learners. On the Nerdy Book Club blog, reading teachers can learn about new techniques to get students reading, including students who speak English as a second language or who have a learning disability that affects their literacy. The Nerdy Book Club blog is a site for reading teachers and anyone else who loves books and reading. The blog issues its own awards every year in multiple categories for great new books. Some of the topics on the Nerdy Book Club blog include how to be a literacy leader, helping older students learn how to love reading again and why rhyming books can still be fun even for grownups. The Nerdy Book Club has multiple authors writing posts. Their posts are also available as podcasts.
Helping Readers Love Reading
Helping Readers Love Reading is a blog written by Brian Wilhorn. It explores how to motivate readers and how to transform a person who has to read into one who wants and loves to read. The blog posts focus on two areas, including books that are worth reading and books that learners will want to read. Some of the topics on the blog include books with a surprise and books in which a character is thankful. This blog is updated a few times every week.

Each of these blogs for reading teachers offers some inspiration on how to accommodate learners. They also provide some guidance on choosing books and helping kids want to red more. Spending a few minutes per day on these five blogs for reading teachers is a worthwhile time investment.
