Bluefield College offers education degrees through the School of Education and Social Sciences. The school offers a Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies with licensure options in Special Education: General Curriculum PreK-6, Elementary Education PreK-6, Grades PreK-12, and Secondary Grades 612. It also offers an Online Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education, Online Master of Arts in Education, and Master of Arts in Educational Leadership.
The Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies is commonly referred to as the Teacher Education Program. It strives to prepare qualified and caring teachers. Students are able to select various licensure options including Special Education: General Curriculum PreK-6, Elementary Education PreK-6, Grades PreK-12, and Secondary Grades 612. The core courses include Curriculum, Assessment, and Instruction in Secondary Schools, Teaching Reading in the Content Area, reading and Language Arts, Methods in Teaching Mathematics, Classroom Management, and Assessment and Evaluation. Students must complete field experiences and student teaching components in their licensure areas.
The Online Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education is a non-licensure program that is offered through Bluefield College Online. The program provides the essential skills to make a difference in the academic, social, and cognitive aspects of children from birth to six years old. Students must complete at least 52 credit hours for completion of the program. The courses include Foundations of Early Childhood Development, Safe and Healthy Settings for the Young Child, Guiding Young Children, Observing and Assessing Young Children, Program Development for Young Children, and Early Childhood Program Management. Students must also complete field experience and practicum components.
The Online Master of Arts in Education is available in both non-licensure and licensure options. The 30-hour non-licensure education option is offered completely online with the exception of a final presentation. The Virginia teacher licensure option is a 36-hour program offered all online besides field experiences and student teaching components. The following endorsement areas are offered: Biology, Career and Technology Education: Business and Information Technology, History and Social Sciences, Music Education-Instrumental PreK-12, Music Education-Vocal/Choral PreK-12, Theater Arts PreK-12, and Visual Arts PreK-12. The core courses include Advanced Educational Psychology, Education and Society, Foundations of Special Education, Teaching Strategies for Student Learning, Assessment and Evaluation for Student Growth, and Research in Education.
The Master of Arts in Educational Leadership is intended for those seeking administration positions in the education field. Students gain the knowledge and skills necessary for leadership careers. The program is intended for students with active teaching licenses. The program requires the completion of 36 credit hours and the curriculum is based on real-life situations and it emphasizes enhancing research abilities and leadership skills of every student. The courses include Introduction to Principalship, Classroom Management and Behavior in a Diverse Society, School Law, School and Community Relations, Theories of Educational Leadership, and Understanding and Implementation of Curriculum. Students must complete at least 120 clock hours of field-based experiences and 200 clock hours of internship.
About Bluefield College
Bluefield College is a private, Christ-centered institution of higher learning residing in Bluefield, Virginia. It was established in 1922 as a junior college. The college experiences its largest growth from 1946 to 1971 and it gained national attention. It started offered bachelor’s degrees in 1975. Today, Bluefield College is home to about 1,000 students on its rural 82-acre campus. It uses the semester-based academic calendar system.
