Education Degrees Available Through Duke University

Duke University offers teacher preparation programs through the school’s Trinity College of Arts and Sciences. Students have a number of paths from which they can choose. While pursuing a bachelor of arts or science, students may select a minor in education with or without licensing for elementary or secondary teaching. Students who already have undergraduate degrees may opt for Duke’s Master of Arts in Teaching. The education program at Duke also offers licensing for working with gifted learners.
Undergraduate students may major in one of Duke’s many areas while pursuing a minor and/or license in education. The Trinity College of Arts and Sciences offers nearly 80 degrees in areas like African and African American studies, art history, chemistry, French studies, history, music, psychology, sociology, theater studies and many others that may be beneficial to a future educator.
As undergraduates pursue their degrees, they can minor in education by taking five specific, education-based courses. These courses include Social and Philosophical Foundations of Education, Educational Psychology and three electives. Students may also pursue field-based experience by taking internships in public school classrooms.
Teaching license preparation is programs are available through Duke University. Students seeking a license in elementary education must take eight courses that are specifically geared toward that goal. Along with the courses required for an education minor, students must take Teaching Practices in Elementary Mathematics and Science, Teaching Practices in Elementary Language Arts and Social Studies, Elementary School Curriculum and Research and Reflective Practice in Elementary Education. Students must also be involved in an elementary school internship.
The secondary license preparation program is similar to the program for elementary education licensure. Students need seven courses that focus on psychology and teaching high school students. Like the elementary education license preparation, students must take part in an internship. These students also need 24 hours in content area requirements like social studies, math, English or science.
Graduate students may seek a Master of Arts in Teaching. This 12-month program prepares students to earn a license to teach secondary English, social studies, science or math. Students must have an undergraduate degree in their specific field of study in order to complete the master program. Graduate students take courses that include Educating Adolescents, Effective Teaching Strategies and Leading Through Teaching, among others. As with undergraduate students, those seeking a graduate degree must complete an internship.
The majority of Duke University classes are taught through traditional, in-seat classrooms. Any student wishing to study online should contact the school to learn about any options. While Duke University does not currently offer a teaching degree through its online program, students may earn an online learning certification. This certification program instructs students in creating online classes. Aspiring nurse educators can earn a degree online, though. The Master of Science in Nursing with a major in nursing education can be earned from a distance.

Duke University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. This accreditation covers all undergraduate and graduate degree programs as well as certifications. Duke’s accreditation is reaffirmed every 10 years.
Duke University Application Requirements
Students interested in an undergraduate degree with an emphasis on education must apply to the Trinity College of Arts and Sciences. Students must complete an application that has an emphasis on academic performance. Those accepted to Duke must show excellence in academic performance, college entrance test scores, extracurricular activities, and essay writing. Students must also provide written letters of recommendation and transcripts. Duke does not have a minimum standard for college entrance test scores, though most students have ACT scores in the 33 to 35 range and SAT scores of 1490 and above.
Tuition and Financial Aid
The standard tuition for attending Duke University is approximately $78,000 per year. This includes the cost of tuition, room, board, books and supplies, transportation and all other associated fees. Tuition makes up about $58,000 of this cost.
As with most universities, Duke University recommends that all students complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid. The FAFSA provides necessary information regarding the need of students. Students who complete the FAFSA may qualify for federal grants and certain need-based scholarships. The FAFSA is also required for any student loans that may be necessary in order to attend Duke.
About half of all students who attend Duke do not pay the full cost. Students may qualify for need-based grants that cover up to 90 percent of the cost of tuition. They can supplement this with work-study and small loans. Duke determines the amount of the need-based grant entirely based on the amount that parents are expected to be able to pay. Grants can be provided to cover the rest of the cost of tuition as well as books and room and board.
Along with need-based aid, Duke offers a number of merit-based and athletic scholarships. Students are encouraged to apply to as many of these as possible. Prospective students are welcome to speak with the school’s financial aid office to learn which scholarships and grants may work for them.
