At Speight Hall, the College of Education led by Dr. Linda Patriarca awards a 125-credit Elementary Education BS where pre-service East Carolina University Pirates complete weekly practicum visits in Pitt County Public Schools and Taskstream portfolios for A-level certification in grades K-6. Chaired by Dr. Marsha Tripp, the Special Education BS builds a 126-credit, CAEP-accredited path to K-12 licensure with Irene Howell Assistive Technology Center practice, internships like Washington Center School, Kappa Delta Pi membership, and an Autism Certificate. Other options include the Middle Grades Education BS, Birth-Kindergarten Teacher Education BS, History Secondary Education BS, Mathematics Secondary Education BS, English Secondary Education BS, and Physical Education BS.
Online via Moodle, the Reading Education MAEd follows a 39-credit, thesis-optional curriculum outlined by Dr. Elizabeth Swaggerty according to International Reading Association standards for M-level certification after 6000-level Web courses like Applied Phonics and 16-week internships. Each June, the Educational Leadership EdD admits 60-credit, three-year cohorts of 15-18 certified teachers into the hybrid K-12 or Higher Education track advised by Dr. Heidi Puckett with dissertation Rural Education Institute research for superintendent’s licensure. Additional offerings include the Business Education MAEd, Instructional Technology MAEd, Adult Education MAEd, Curriculum & Instruction MAEd, Science Education MAEd, Health Education MA, Hispanic Studies MAT, and Art Education MAT.
About East Carolina University
East Carolina University was opened on October 5, 1909, by the 44th Governor Thomas Jordan Jarvis as the East Carolina Teachers Training School with 123 women enrolled. In 1914, ECTTS established the Red Cross Workroom to aid World War I efforts. In Spring 1916, Helen Keller addressed students at the Main Auditorium. The next year, ECTTS developed the three-room Joyner School for teaching practicum. In December 1920, the Student Government Association was formed. In 1921, it became East Carolina Teachers College and started BA/BS degrees. One decade later, the Legislature authorized ECTC for the first Master of Arts in Education. In 1948, enrollment of men grew rapidly thanks to GI Bill benefits. On September 17, 1960, President John F. Kennedy began his statewide campaign on-campus. In 1967, the East Carolina University name was formally taken.
Endowed for $185.8 million, East Carolina University now employs 5,607 staff serving 23,265 undergrad and 5,866 post-grad Pirates from 40 countries online or at three Greenville campuses with 300+ clubs like the Art Education Guild. East Carolina University Accreditation Details
On March 20, 2017, East Carolina University satisfactorily submitted the Fifth-Year Interim Report to the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) to continue the Level VI accreditation status through 2022-23 under Provost Ron Mitchelson, Ph.D., who earned the Charles Clifford Huntington Memorial Award. This elite 11-state Southeast Region accreditor is authorized by the U.S. Department of Education to evaluate ECU’s 11 colleges and 202 degrees. Particularly, the College of Education was reaffirmed by the Council on Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) through December 2022. ECU is authorized by the North Carolina State Department of Public Instruction for K-12 certification. On June 1, 2015, the American Library Association (ALA) accredited the School Library Science MLS. The Educational Administration & Supervision EdS was approved by the Educational Leadership Constituent Council (ELCC) in Spring 2013.
East Carolina University Application Requirements
Admission to East Carolina University is classified “selective” by the U.S. News & World Report since only 78.8 percent of the 15,860 Fall 2018 applicants were successful. Freshman Pirates entering the College of Education are reviewed holistically after high school graduation or GED completion. Having a minimum 2.5 GPA is required, but the average is 3.59. The middle 50th percentile earn SAT composite scores of 1100-1210. Mid-range ACT scores are 21-25. International students need at least 71 TOEFL iBT, 450 SAT Reading, or 6.0 IELTS marks. Education BS transfers age 21+ are test-optional with 24 credits and GPAs above 2.0. Online Master of Arts in Education majors necessitate an accredited bachelor’s and 3.0 GPA. Holding valid North Carolina A-level licensure is mandated. Educational Leadership EdD entrants must verify at least 36 months of teaching experience. GRE or MAT scores in the upper quartile are also preferred.
East Carolina University has a freshman priority deadline of January 15th. College of Education transfers should file by May 15th or December 1st. Most MAEd programs have priority deadlines of May 1st and October 1st. The Music Education MM closes on April 1st each year. Nursing Education MSN majors file until June 15th or November 1st. The Educational Leadership EdD considers candidates until March 15th. English Education MAT entrants are welcome until May 1st. Accordingly, complete the $75 ECU or Common Application online. Tuition and Financial Aid
For 2019-20, East Carolina University has priced in-state undergrad tuition and fees at $7,239 annually. Non-resident bachelor’s tuition increases to $23,516 each year. Room and board at the 14 dorms like Garrett Hall costs $10,030 yearly. ECU budgets $1,490 for texts, $1,430 for miscellaneous, $2,120 for travel, and $80 for loan fees. Traditional annual attendance equals $22,389 in-state and $37,968 out-of-state. Undergrad distance education bills $166 to $716 per credit. The Gordon Darragh Leadership Scholars Program covers full tuition for outstanding freshmen with minimum 3.5 GPAs. The Betty Abernathy Scholarship gifts $20,000 total for future math and science teachers applying by January 15th. Federal aid, including the Teach Grant and Teacher Loan Forgiveness Program, require FAFSA applications coded 002923. Since 2017, the North Carolina Teaching Fellows Program has provided up to $8,250 annually for in-state residents.
