The Teachers College was the first department founded at Emporia State University with an origination date of 1863. The university offers education degrees for undergraduates and graduates, as well as licensure programs and certificates. About Emporia State University
Emporia State University is located in Emporia, Kansas, and the school has been in operation since 1863. Founded as the Kansas State Normal School, the institution was the third public university established in the state. Today, there are six universities within the state university system. The school’s varsity sports teams participate in NCAA Division II games, and the women’s basketball team at the university has won an NCAA Championship.
The university’s teams play as the Hornets and Lady Hornets, and their mascot is named Corky the Hornet. The school’s official colors are gold and black. The rural campus covers 234 acres in Emporia, and it offers more than 80 majors from its four colleges and schools. Emporia State University Accreditation Details
Emporia State University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), and this accreditation is an institutional-wide approval. The HLC accredits schools throughout the Midwest and in Kansas. Classes offered online and through the university’s satellite campus in Kansas City are also accredited. Some of the schools, programs, and degrees have received further accreditation from various organizations.
For example, the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business has accredited the programs offered by the School of Business. Similarly, the School of Library and Information Management is accredited by the American Library Association (ALA). The school is the only department in Kansas that has been accredited by the ALA. The School Library Media Licensure program is also accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education.
Emporia State University Application Requirements
First-time undergraduates who want to attend Emporia State University will use the online application, as well as send a $30 application fee to begin the process. Students can qualify for an application fee waiver by submitting an extra form. Prospective students should have their standardized test scores sent to the university and have the choice to submit scores from the SAT or ACT. Transcripts from the student’s high school should also be sent to the university.
Admission requirements include having an ACT score of at least 21 or an SAT score of at least 1060. Students should also graduate in the top third of their graduating class and have a minimum GPA of 2.0 in all pre-college curriculum classes that are required by the university. Non-Kansas residents must have a GPA of 2.5. Students who have earned a GED or were homeschooled may also apply and must meet similar qualifications for those equivalent degrees.
Tuition and Financial Aid
Tuition and fees depend on a student’s level in college, as well as the residency claimed by the student. Kansas residents will pay $3,404 per semester, and some Missouri residents will also qualify for in-state tuition. Students in neighboring states like Illinois, Indiana, North Dakota, and Michigan will qualify for a reduced non-resident rate of $4,687 per semester. Non-residents from all other areas will pay $10,357 per semester.
Housing and meals may add an average of $4,741 per semester, and students should budget around $500 per semester for books and supplies. Graduate school costs are $266.41 for Kansas residents and some residents of Missouri and are $604.29 for non-residents. Students from neighboring states will pay a reduced rate of $399.62 per credit hour.
As with other accredited institutions throughout the United States, students will submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) if they want to qualify for financial aid at Emporia State University. The university may award grants, scholarships, and loans based on the student’s responses on the FAFSA form. The university indicates that there are no deadlines for applying for financial aid but that early applications are highly recommended.
There are several institutional scholarships offered by the university like the Presidential Scholarship, the Education + Wellness Scholarship, and various scholarships offered to Kansas residents and high school graduates.
