The College of Education at Georgia Southern University – Statesboro offers multiple degree programs for students who want to become licensed teachers and those who already have their licenses. Undergrads can enroll in the main Bachelor of Science in Education and pick the concentration that most appeals to them. There are concentrations designed for those who want to work as kindergarten or elementary school teachers and those who want to teach children with special needs. All of the education programs include a general education core that is worth 42 credits and 18 credits of core teaching classes. It was established in 1906 and opened two years later as the First District Agricultural and Mechanical School. To meet the growing need for trained teachers in the south, the school became the Georgia Normal School in 1924 and then the South Georgia Teachers College. The campus would also serve as the Georgia Teachers College and then Georgia Southern College before becoming GS. Some add Statesboro to the university’s name to refer to the main campus in the system. There are other GS campuses in Hinesville and Savannah.

Georgia Southern University – Statesboro Accreditation Details
GS has the regional accreditation required of students in need of financial aid. It comes from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) and gives any student the option of using the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) when they apply. SACS accreditation also lets Georgia Southern accept transfer credits from incoming students. Georgia Southern University – Statesboro Application Requirements
Georgia Southern has a priority deadline of August first. This allows students to apply just a few weeks before the fall semester starts. It will accept applications sent in after this deadline too. Students who need scholarships should apply by the early deadline of November first. If any scholarships are remaining, GS will accept applications up through the first of February. The university also encourages students to submit the FAFSA around the same time that they apply to GS.
Incoming freshmen need to complete the application, which asks for a list of their senior classes. They will pay a $30 application fee, have their guidance counselors submit their transcripts and ask the testing board to send their ACT or SAT scores. GS requires that all documents ship to the Office of Admissions.

Tuition and Financial Aid
At GS, undergrads pay $427.13 per credit hour as a Georgia resident or $887.73 per credit hour as a nonresident. Full-time students will take 15 credit hours and pay either $3,788 or $10,687 each semester based on whether they are residents of the state. GS offers two dining packages that start at $1,725 per term and a variety of dorm rooms that cost $2,120 and up each semester. Some of the scholarships offered by GS are renewable for up to two or four years. There are scholarships designed for both residents and non-residents. Undergrads can use work-study, student loans and other awards that they get with the FAFSA to pay their costs.
Georgia Southern graduate students pay $522 per credit hour as a resident and $1,350 per credit hour as a nonresident. This includes all of the university’s fees too. The university hires graduate students as research, teaching and lab assistants each year. Students work a set number of hours each week and are responsible for different tasks.
