The Division of Education grants a Bachelor of Science in Education (B.S.Ed.) at a personalized 13:1 ratio for Mayville State University undergrads called to creatively instruct young people. Advised by Dr. Kelli Odden, the 135-credit, lockstep program has specializations in Early Childhood, Elementary, Secondary, Special, Biology, Chemistry, English, Health, History, Math, Physical, and Social Science Education. Two options, the Special Education B.S.Ed. and Mathematics Education B.S.Ed., are delivered online except for the 16-week student teaching semester. Undergrads could also transfer from Mayville’s 64-credit Online Associate of Arts (A.A.) in Early Childhood designed for Head Start jobs. Since August 2016, the Online Master of Arts in Teaching has logged into Moodle for a 32-credit, CAEP-accredited sequence led by Dr. Andi Dulski-Bucholz that gives career changers initial North Dakota certification. The 10-credit Graduate Certificate in Online Digital Teaching can be added for K-12 instructional practice on the Internet.
About Mayville State University
Mayville State University originated in 1889 when the North Dakota Constitutional Convention allocated 30,000 Red River Valley acres to erect the Mayville Normal School for teachers. In 1925, the Legislative Assembly gave it four-year status for the initial Bachelor of Arts in Education. Two decades later, Mayville switched the B.A. to a B.S.Ed. and implemented the first non-teaching major. By 1987, the Mayville State University name was adopted for more comprehensive degrees. Within four years, it was welcomed into today’s 11-site North Dakota University System. In 2011, the Education & Innovation Center in Byrnes-Quanbeck Library launched a STEAM Initiative for P-16 teachers. Washington Monthly named Mayville the 298th best baccalaureate institution for the 84th highest graduation rate. PayScale calculated the 750th biggest mid-career median wage of $85,000 for Mayville State alums. In 2014, Prairie Business magazine profiled Mayville for its highest enrollment over 1,000. Mayville State University Accreditation Details
On August 15, 2016, Mayville State University received an official reaffirmation letter from the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association (HLC-NCA) for passing the Open Pathway process to renew Level III accreditation through 2026 under its 17th president, Dr. Brian Van Horn, who earned the ACHE Stepping Up to the Plate Award for Leadership. Based 701 miles southeast via Interstate 94 in Chicago, this mega 19-state Upper Midwest accreditor is authorized by the U.S. Secretary of Education to check the academic soundness of Mayville’s two associate, 27 baccalaureate, one master’s, and two certificate offerings. The Teacher Education Department was accredited by the Council on Accreditation for Educator Preparation (CAEP) in October 2015. Teacher preparation also fulfills the North Dakota Education Standards and Practices Board (ESPB) requirements.
Mayville State University Application Requirements
Admission to Mayville State University is classified “non-competitive” by Peterson’s despite the 57 percent acceptance rate that allowed just 236 of the 413 Fall 2017 applicants. First-year Comets shooting for the B.S.Ed. majors must fulfill the North Dakota University System college preparatory core, which needs four units of English. Achieving at least 410 on each GED subject exam qualifies too. Cumulative high school GPAs from 9th to 11th grade must top 2.0, though the average is 2.99. At a minimum, freshmen need an 18 ACT or 780 SAT score. Teacher Education Department transfers are test-optional with 24+ semester credits and 2.0 collegiate GPAs or greater. If born after 1956, students must have gotten MMR and meningitis vaccines. The Online Master of Arts in Teaching stipulates an accredited four-year bachelor’s in any major with grades above 3.0 and TaskStream accounts.
Mayville State University has rolling year-round admission to prevent missing pesky deadlines. Interested students create Comet VIP accounts to submit the $35 Application for Admission online. For 2018-19, Mayville State University is billing North Dakota undergrads $277 per credit or $6,666 annually full-time. Non-resident Bachelor of Science in Education majors pay $391 per credit or $9,399 per year. The Midwestern Higher Education Compact lowers costs to $334 and $8,033 respectively. Note international students afford $658 per credit and $15,794 yearly. Living at the Traill County campus’ dorms like Agassiz Hall add $2,310 to $4,825. Standard plans for Comet’s Landing are $2,035 to $4,400 every year. Annual bachelor’s attendance equals around $16,169 in-state and $19,016 out-of-state. Online B.S.Ed. in Mathematics or Special Education courses are $295 per credit. The Master of Arts in Teaching Online charges $323 per credit or $10,336 total.
According to the NCES College Navigator, the Financial Aid Office in Old Main presents 95 percent of new full-time Mayville Comets average assistance of $4,720 for $2.79 million overall.
