Michigan State University Application Requirements
Students who wish to apply to the undergraduate program at Michigan State University must complete the online application, provide college entrance test results and have official transcripts sent to the university.
First-time freshman applicants are considered for admission to Michigan State University based on class rank, high school GPA and extracurricular activities. Most students admitted to Michigan State University have at least a 3.5 GPA, an ACT score of at least 23 and/or a total SAT score of no less than 1130.
Undergraduate applicants must have completed the minimum high school course requirements in order to be admitted. They must have successfully completed a minimum of four years of English, three years each of mathematics and social studies and two years each of science and a single foreign language.
Applicants interested in attending the College of Education graduate school should consult the specific program they wish to enter. At a minimum, these applicants must complete the online application, provide a current CV or resume, provide a statement of professional goals, offer a writing sample, provide three references and have official transcripts from all previously attended schools sent to the university.
Tuition and Financial Aid
The cost of attending Michigan State University as an undergraduate is $25,046 per year for Michigan residents and $50,352 for out-of-state students. These costs include tuition and room and board. Michigan students and out-of-state students who do not live on campus can expect to pay $14,524 or $39,830 per year for tuition, respectively.
Students can offset the cost of education through need-based awards, work-study or merit-based scholarships. Need-based aid is determined by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA. Students can earn federal and state grants if they qualify based on income. The FAFSA is also used for certain scholarships and loans. Work-study is also awarded according to information provided on the FAFSA.
Merit-based scholarships consider high school grades, test scores and/or extra-curricular activities to determine if a student is eligible. The most coveted is the Alumni Distinguished Scholarship. This scholarship covers the full cost of tuition, fees, room and board, and a $1,000 yearly stipend. It is awarded based on GPA and ACT/SAT test scores. The top 15 applicants to Michigan State University are offered this scholarship. The next 20 highest scoring applicants are offered the Distinguished Freshman Scholarship. This award covers the full cost of tuition and fees for up to eight semesters.
