Education Degree Programs Available at New Jersey City University

New Jersey City University offers education degree programs through the Deborah Cannon Partridge Wolfe College of Education. Undergrads can choose from early childhood education programs designed for teaching preschool through third-grade classes and an early childhood education program that allows them to teach in elementary schools too. The full program also has emphasis areas in special education and infant and toddler services. Majors take courses that include Problem Solving in Mathematics, The Human Body, Human Development: Prenatal Through Adolescence, Early Primary Curriculum Grades 1-3: Methods of Content Delivery and Reflecting on Knowledge and Practice. They’ll also do two clinical practices.
Students can also earn bachelor’s degrees that allow them to work in K-6 or K-12 settings. The K-12 track is the secondary education major, which features Challenges in Urban Education, Focus: Reading Language and Literacy, Classroom Management and Assessment and Methods and Materials of Teaching Science in Middle and Secondary Schools. Students will take at least one class that includes an internship and do a practicum. New Jersey City University also offers a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Special Education that looks at how teachers can assist students with physical or mental disabilities.
Now available is a program for students called New Pathways to Teaching in NJ. New Jersey City University designed this program for students who have undergrad degrees in other fields but want to teach. It includes affordable courses that let students learn fundamentals about teaching and low-cost courses that count towards a graduate degree. Students who finish this program and pass the teaching certification exam can work as teachers across New Jersey. Though this program is only open to in-state residents, it includes tracks to help students earn their certificates in more than 60 fields, including elementary, secondary and special education.
Some graduate degree programs are available from New Jersey City University, including a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) in Elementary Education and a Master of Arts (M.A.) in Urban Education, Teaching and Learning in Urban Schools. This program includes two phases. In the first phase, students take all their required courses. They will then spend a full year teaching in an NJ school. Urban Curriculum, Language Culture and Communication, Innovations in Teaching in the Urban Setting and Emotional and Behavior Disorders in Children and Youth are some required classes. Graduate students can also study early childhood education, education administration, education technology and multicultural education at the university.
About New Jersey City University
New Jersey City University is a public university usually called NJCU. Established in 1927, it was given a charter by the state to operate as the New Jersey State Normal School at Jersey City. It became the New Jersey State Teachers College at Jersey City in 1935 after adding bachelor’s degree programs in education. The university went through other name changes in the coming years as it transitioned from a teaching college to a full college and then a university. Though NJSU offers many degree programs, most of its graduates work as teachers in public schools across the Garden State. It now offers a professional security program that includes internships with government agencies and programs to help students get their NJ teaching licenses.
New Jersey City University Accreditation Details
The College of Education at NJCU has accreditation from the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP). This accreditation shows all incoming students that they will learn the skills needed to become teachers and to pass the teaching certification exam. The university itself was accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE). With this regional accreditation, NJCU students can get financial aid when they use the university’s school code on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
New Jersey City University Application Requirements
NJCU requires a completed application and a $55 application fee from students applying to a graduate education program. Those students need to write an essay of 250 to 500 words to show the goals they have for that program and after they graduate. They also need to provide transcripts that show all the education classes they took and the grades they earned in those courses. A passing score on the Praxis exam is required of students who do not have a score of 1660/23 on the SAT/ACT, a 4.0 score on the writing portion of the GRE and 310 on the verbal and math portions of that exam or a teaching certificate from the New Jersey Department of Education. NJCU has a priority application deadline of July first for the fall semester.
Undergrads can apply online to NJCU with the Common Application. The university has an April first deadline for the fall semester and a December first deadline for the spring semester. Students can contact the Office of Admissions if they have any problems with the application. After applying online, they can submit their high school transcripts to NJCU and have their standardized test scores sent. NJCU asks students to take classes in high school that will prepare them for college, including two to three years of mathematics and science courses and four years of English and writing classes.
Tuition and Financial Aid
Education majors at NJCU pay $411.05 per credit hour as a New Jersey resident and $737.95 as a nonresident. Both of these rates include the student activity fee that the university charges. Those who take more than 11 credits will qualify for one of the university’s flat rates of $6,206.55 or $11,110.35 per semester. Education majors taking graduate classes at NJCU pay $711.40 per credit hour as a resident and $1,138.20 as a nonresident. All graduate students taking online classes will pay the in-state tuition rate.
Thanks to scholarships and other financial aid, NJCU can significantly reduce the out of pocket costs that students face. It offers financial aid packages to all students who file the FAFSA before the term begins. Scholarships, grants, work-study, and loans are all available for students who show need on the FAFSA or demonstrate merit on their academic applications.
