Online Master of Science With a Specialization in Reading Education
The Master of Science (M.S.) in Education with a specialization in reading education through the Abraham S. Fischler College of Education at Nova Southeastern University focuses on the areas of language arts and literacy. The specialization provides current and aspiring teachers with the knowledge and skills they need to not only develop curriculum but also instruct, assess, and evaluate students in literacy. The curriculum for master’s degree in reading education is based on research, infusing scientifically based evidence of the most effective reading methods and strategies. The program is designed to solidify the connection between instructional practice and theory, and it aims to deepen all students’ professional skills and knowledge in regards to effective literacy instruction.
The master’s degree in reading education is designed for students who hold bachelor’s degrees in the field of education and who wish to pursue graduate degrees to further increase their skills and knowledge in the areas of reading and teaching. It was also developed for current and practicing language arts and reading teachers who are looking to gain additional experience in their current position or field.
Students must complete a total of 36 credits in order to earn their degree. Topics of study include administration and interpretation of instructional assessments, reading supervision and curriculum development, reading in the content area, and educational measurements. Students will also study language arts in the secondary school, literature for children and adolescents, and contemporary foundations of reading. Other areas of focus include assessments in reading, educational research for practitioners, and foundations of reading such as research perspectives, theory, and practice.
The degree also includes two supervised reading practicums in individual remediation and group remediation. The applied professional experience a practical application, and it is the final step before students earn their degree. Students are engaged in this practicum that involves problem-solving experiences designed with the goal of improving reading-related challenges. Based on a comprehensive review of the reading research knowledge and literature learned throughout field experiences and the coursework, students choose, plan, and use appropriate reading materials, strategies, and assessment instruments to identify student needs and provide reading instruction for a specified time period in a K-12 classroom. Students create files of the assessment instruments used and samples of their students’ work in reflective journals in order to show they have achieved the required content and professional standards.
The coursework for the program is available at many NSU campuses as well as online. The online option allows distance learners and international students to receive instruction, submit coursework, and interact with professors and participants via the Internet. As a result, busy working professionals have the opportunity to earn their master’s degree without having to travel long distances or leave their jobs. In order to graduate, students must earn a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher, satisfactorily complete all required coursework, and successfully complete the applied professional experience, including the portfolio.

Nova Southeastern University Accreditation Details
Nova Southeastern University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) to award professional, doctoral, educational specialist, master’s, bachelor’s, and associate degrees. In addition, the Fischler College of Education at Nova Southeastern is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). This accreditation covers advanced educator preparation programs and initial teacher preparation programs online and at all university locations. However, it does not include individual education courses that Nova Southeastern offers to P-12 educators for re-licensure, professional development, or other purposes.
Nova Southeastern University Application Requirements
In order to be accepted into the Master of Science (M.S.) in Education with a specialization in reading education program, students must complete an admission packet and pay a $50 nonrefundable application fee. Applicants must also provide official transcripts from all previously attended universities or colleges as well as a transcript showing evidence of a bachelor’s degree. Students may also be required to provide graduate examination test scores, letters of recommendation and/or a statement of career goals.
Tuition and Financial Aid
Students pursuing a Master of Science (M.S.) in Education degree with a reading education concentration can expect to pay $995 per credit hour for the program. At 36 credit hours, the total cost for tuition itself is $35,820. In addition, students are expected to pay a $450 student services fee that is assessed each semester for students taking two or more courses, not to exceed $1,350 per year. Students taking one three-credit-hour course will pay $225 per semester, not to exceed $675 per year. This fee is used for the introduction of new degrees and for the enhancement of existing activities concerning technology services, welfare, safety, and health that are available to NSU students. Other fees may include those for registration, the degree itself, transcripts, internships, and more.
Nova Southeastern offers financial aid awards to eligible first professional and graduate students that may consist of a combination of loans, student employment, scholarships, and grants. Scholarships and grants are considered “self-help aid” and usually do not need to be repaid. By the same token, loans and student employment are considered “self-help aid” because students usually take on additional responsibilities in exchange for the aid. More than 80 percent of Nova Southeastern University students are awarded some type of loan, grant, scholarship, or student employment opportunity.
