Directed by Dr. Abha Gupta, the 30-credit Reading Education M.S.Ed. utilizes the Literacy Center in Norfolk plus supervised practicum to prepare K-12 specialists. The Adapted Physical Education M.S.Ed. builds a 30-credit, thesis-optional sequence of evening classes from Motor Development to Coaching Theory with experience in ODU’s Outdoor Adventure Program.

About Old Dominion University
Old Dominion University originated on September 3, 1930, when the College of William and Mary founded 237 years prior opened a Norfolk Division for 206 learners. In 1931, it partnered with the Virginia Polytechnic Institute to create a 2+2 engineering program. In 1946, Lewis W. Webb Jr., the “Father of Old Dominion University,” assumed the top leadership role. In 1952, it became Virginia’s first school to deliver noncredit television classes. In June 1956, Old Dominion graduated an inaugural class of bachelor’s students. On February 16, 1962, ODU was given full independence by Governor Albertis Harrison. Old Dominion University Accreditation Details
On July 20, 2012, Old Dominion University satisfactorily passed its in-depth evaluation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) to renew Level VI accreditation with a Quality Enhancement Plan through 2022-23 under its eighth president, Mr. John Roderick, who earned the Men for Hope Trailblazer Award. Located 563 miles down Interstate 85 in Decatur, Georgia, this esteemed 11-state Southeast Region accreditor is recognized by the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) to assess ODU’s 91 bachelor’s, 41 master’s, 22 doctoral, and two specialist degrees. Particularly, the Darden College of Education & Professional Studies was accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) in Spring 2017. The Music Education B.M. is approved by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) through 2022.
Old Dominion University Application Requirements
Admission to Old Dominion University is classified “moderately difficult” by Peterson’s though 11,600 of the 13,335 Fall 2017 applicants were triumphant for 87 percent acceptance. First-year Monarchs must exhibit adequate academic preparation with four English, three History, three Math, and three Science units in high school. GED equivalent credentials are allowed if scored 580 or higher. On average, freshmen present a 3.26 GPA, 1091 New SAT, and 23 ACT mark. The Patricia & Douglas Perry Honors Program requires a minimum 3.5 GPA and 1200 SAT score. Darden College transfers must hold 15+ non-remedial credits with GPAs above 2.5 at other accredited institutions. English proficiency must be proven with a 6.5 IELTS, 480 SAT Reading, or 550 TOEFL score if foreign. Diverse M.S.Ed. programs mandate a four-year bachelor’s education major with GPAs over 3.0. Minimum Praxis scores are 156 Reading and 150 Math. Current K-12 licensure with at least two years of experience is preferred.
Old Dominion University has a freshman deadline of December 1st for Early Action. Rolling undergrad admission allows entry until August 1st for Fall, October 1st for Spring, and March 15th for Summer starts. The Darden College of Education & Professional Studies generally has June 1st, November 1st, and March 1st graduate deadlines for U.S. residents. International post-grads must apply before April 15th, October 1st, or February 1st. The Educational Leadership Ph.D. is an exception closing on June 1st yearly. Tuition and Financial Aid
For 2018-19, Old Dominion University charged full-time Education B.S./B.M. majors from Virginia $352 per credit. Non-resident undergrad tuition was $982 per credit. Active-duty military tuition dropped to $250 per credit. Bachelor’s students paid the $20 technology fee and $9 general services fee per credit. New students covered a one-time $75 transition fee. Health insurance premiums were $191 per month unless waived. Residing at the Norfolk campus’ dorms like Gresham Complex added $5,846 to $10,314 each year for rent. Unlimited meal plans for Broderick Dining Commons were $2,649 extra. The annual cost of attendance equaled $26,456 in-state and $45,356 out-of-state. Graduate Darden College courses billed Virginians $523 and non-residents $1,320 per credit. Online programs were priced $523 to $568 per credit though.
According to the NCES College Navigator, the Student Financial Services Office at 121 Alfred Rollins Hall connects 92 percent of new ODU Monarchs to median aid of $7,270 each for $18.20 million total. Education funds include the Nicholas Andrasz Scholarship, Norfolk School Board Scholarship, Patricia Ann Vaughan Myers Scholarship, Robert Cunningham Scholarship, Costulis Family Scholarship, Higginbotham Scholarship, Libbie & Albert Kaplan Scholarship, Lorraine Buser Halsch Scholarship, Ulysses Turner Scholarship, Peggy Ashford Scott Memorial Scholarship, and Donald Musacchio Scholarship. The Cranmer-Skinner Scholars Program has an April 1st deadline for Honors students with 18+ credits and 3.7 GPAs. Filing FAFSA forms coded 003728 determines eligibility for the $4,000 Federal TEACH Grant and Pell Grant. The Teacher Loan Forgiveness Program deducts up to $17,500 off Federal Direct and Graduate Plus loan balances. The Virginia Department of Education also awards the Teaching Scholarship for up to $10,000 if student GPAs rise above 2.7.
