BA in Elementary Education
Regis College at Regis University offers a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education degree program. This is a preparatory program designed to help students meet the need for educated and trained teachers all across the country. It encourages students to gain experience working with diverse populations and in areas with a higher need than others, including some urban settings and some rural schools. The program includes both elements of classroom learning and fieldwork.
Elementary education majors will take classes that fall into several different groups, including the core foundation and the distributive core. The core foundation includes just two classes that students must take during their first years. Regis created a distributive core that includes up to 46 credits. Those classes cover all the subjects and topics that students might teach in an elementary school. Students will take Physical and Cultural Geography, Teaching the Exceptional Student in the General Education Classroom, Language, Literacy and Linguistics for Educators and Assessment of the Diverse Learner. The university requires that students do several teaching experiences too. They will work in schools and with real students to ensure that they can handle working with their own students after they graduate.
Regis University offers a BA in Elementary Education: Teaching for Social Justice with Initial Licensure program too. This program allows students to earn their teaching licenses and become better equipped to teach social justice subjects to elementary aged children. The university also allows students who already have a bachelor’s degree to go back to school and earn their licenses. Elementary education majors can minor in specific fields such as literacy education, physical education, and special education too. Those in the special education program will do a practicum and take four courses, including Collaboration for the Exceptional Student, Literacy Intervention and Positive Behavior Interventions and Support.
About Regis University
Founded in 1877 as Las Vegas College, Regis University is a private and religiously affiliated university in Colorado. A group of men from Italy founded the college on the beliefs and ideas of the Society of Jesuits. The college operated in Las Vegas, Mexico for several years before moving to Colorado at the request of the Jesuits. Sacred Heart College, which was already in the area, merged with Las Vegas College to become an entirely new school. This school would operate as Regis College for many years before becoming Regis University in more recent years.
The university now consists of five colleges, including Regis College and the College of Contemporary Liberal Studies. Students majoring in education will take classes at Regis College, which is also responsible for many of the university’s graduate degree programs. The Regis campus is home to the Institute on the Common Good. Both professors and students, as well as locals and guests, can get together to talk about emerging topics and find ways to help others in need. U.S. News and World Report ranks Regis as the 23rd best university in the west. It has an enrollment across all levels of more than 8,300 students.
Regis University Accreditation Details
Regis has both general accreditation and accreditation for its education programs. The Teacher Education Accreditation Council (TEAC) and its Accreditation Committee granted accreditation to the university’s education programs at both the undergrad and graduate levels. Regis also has regional accreditation from the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCACS), which is the accreditation that allows students to earn useful degrees and get financial aid to pay for their degrees. NCACS accreditation also allows students who earned any college credits to transfer some or all of those credits into a Regis program.
Regis University Application Requirements
Any undergrad applying to Regis University must use the online application designed by the school. A new student can start a brand new application and link an account to that application. Once he or she sets up a username and password, the student can log in and out regularly to work on the application and go over it before submitting it. Regis accepts up to 90 credits of work completed at any other school with regional accreditation as well as college credits earned through select high school programs. Those students must submit transcripts that show the names of each class taken, the grades received in each class and the total number of credits earned. Regis will use those transcripts to determine whether the credits will transfer and which classes those credits will replace.
Students who recently graduated from high school and anyone who does not have any college credits will submit their official high school transcripts instead. Regis will also accept a homeschool transcript or proof that an incoming student has an equivalency diploma. Students will also submit a resume and a personal essay statement. This statement should be at least 400 words but no longer than 600 words. Regis asks students to write about their lives, hobbies and interests, why they want to study at the university and how the university will help them meet any of their personal or professional goals.
Tuition and Financial Aid
Undergrads attending Regis University who are full-time students will pay $18,230 per semester. This covers their total tuition and all the university’s technology and other fees. Full-time students can also take classes during the shorter summer session for $460 per credit hour. A full-time student is anyone who takes at least 12 credits but no more than 18 credits in the same semester. Part-time students who take 11 credits or less pay $1,102 per credit hour. Full-time students who take more than 18 credits will pay a similar rate, which the university calls an overload charge.
Regis awards financial aid packages for a number of its students every year. Those who need aid must put the university’s school code on the FAFSA, which they can complete and submit online at the beginning of October or at any time through the spring or early summer. The university has a grant that goes to students who need more financial aid, but it also has scholarships for those who demonstrate talents in certain areas and students with more merit. Undergrads can also qualify for federal government student aid too. Students enrolling in the Regis University elementary education program will automatically receive some types of financial aid based on their FAFSA information.
