Education Programs Available at the Texas Woman’s University

Despite its name, the Texas Woman’s University offers education degree programs for both women and men. Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degrees are available for those who want to teach at both the elementary and middle school levels. The elementary programs prepare students for working with children up through the sixth grade, while the middle school programs allow them to work with kids in fourth through eighth grades. Students can choose an emphasis on the core subjects or a specialized area such as bilingual education, deaf and hard of hearing education, special education or English as a second language teaching. The middle school programs include a language arts concentration too.
Designed to meet the Texas core curriculum for university students, each program features general education classes and specialized courses that relate to their teaching fields. They will take classes such as Literacy Foundations, Science in the Elementary Classroom, Integrated Language Arts and Reading Assessment and Instruction. Education majors will also take a course called Classroom Environment and Management, which teaches them how to handle problem or disruptive students and how to control their classes. There is also a Clinical Student Teaching requirement, which asks that students teach in a real school.
At the graduate level, the university offers a certification program for students who have a bachelor’s degree and want to teach. It allows students to take courses designed to help them teach at the elementary, middle or high school level. They also get help preparing for the Praxis exam, which they need to pass to get a Texas teaching license. Foundations for Teaching and Learning, Introduction to Literacy, Literacy in Content Areas and Learning Theory, Development and Research are among the program’s required courses. Students will also some student teaching and two internships.
A Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) program offers advanced training for teachers and education majors. This program includes up to 37 credits of classes but may allow students to take fewer classes based on how much teaching experience they have. They will do full-time internships and have a choice between doing one or two. These students will also take classes that include Diversity in the Classroom, Introduction to Literacy and Learning in the Disciplines and Effective Design and Management of the Classroom Environment.
Texas Woman’s University also offers graduate degree programs in educational leadership, special education, nursing education (online), and curriculum and instruction.
About the Texas Woman’s University
The Texas Woman’s University is a public university in Denton, Texas. Established in 1901, it served as the College of Industrial Arts in its early years before becoming the Texas State College for Women. During its years as a college for women, it became a popular college for students who found that they had few options at other schools. Citing the number of male students interested in attending, the university became coeducational in the early 1970s. Though it still uses the Texas Woman’s University name, it allows men to enroll in all its programs. Also called TWU, the university has campuses in both Houston and Dallas.
Texas Woman’s University Accreditation Details
With regional accreditation, TWU allows students to submit their transcripts for evaluation and to get credit for the college courses they took. This is also what gives students the chance to use the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) if they need financial aid. TWU has regional accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCC).
Texas Woman’s University Application Requirements
New undergrads applying to TWU do not need to follow a set application deadline because the university does not have one. It has a rolling admissions policy that allows departments to accept new students as long as they have space remaining. There is a priority deadline of January 15 for those who need financial aid and a priority deadline of March 15 for those seeking scholarships. Students need a GED, home school transcript or a high school diploma to enroll. They should graduate within the top half of their high schools and have a grade point average of 2.0 or higher. TWU uses the Apply Texas website and charges a $50 application fee. Students also need to submit an ACT/SAT score and an official transcript.
Prior to enrolling in any of the TWU graduate education programs, students must take and pass a pre-admission content test. The university does not guarantee that a high school on any of those exams will grant the student acceptance because it also weighs other factors. Prospective students have until July 15 to apply for the fall semester and November first to apply for the spring semester. They will also need an undergraduate degree, a GPA of at least 2.75 in all classes taken at the bachelor’s level and a GPA of 3.0 or higher in the last 60 units or credits. Though TWU charges a $100 application fee, it will apply this payment to the student’s costs when accepted. Graduate students can submit their transcripts and proof of the pre-admission test taken after finishing the TWU application.
Tuition and Financial Aid
Texas residents attending TWU pay $226.30 per credit hour for undergrad classes and $276.30 per credit hour for graduate classes. Most nonresidents pay $648.30 to $698.30 per credit hour for undergraduate and graduate classes. The university does offer a discount for Oklahoma students who sign a form and show proof of where they live. This discount allows them to pay $256.30 per credit hour for their undergrad classes. Those students will pay the same nonresident rate that others pay in one of the university’s graduate programs.
TWU typically sends out financial aid packages a few weeks after receiving the FAFSA from a student. The aid given to undergrads will depend heavily on how much their families can help and how much need they have. Not only can they get grants from the university and the government, but they may qualify for student employment and loans too. Graduate students who apply for financial aid can get student loans too. There are also a number of scholarship opportunities available for incoming students that they can renew as long as they keep their grades up. The Texas Woman’s University even offers some scholarships specifically for students enrolled in its education degree programs.
