The Associate of Applied Science in Early Childhood Education is available both on campus in Anchorage and online. The program blends theory and practice in the practice of early childhood education, creating experts who are able to deliver quality care and education for young children from birth through age eight. The program strengthens observation abilities and developing skills designed to work with young children. Students gain familiarity with continuing professional growth and provide opportunities to discuss best practices with other educational experts. Courses required may include Child Nutrition, Human Development and Learning, Child and Adolescent Development and Integrated Curriculum for Young Children. Field experience is required.
The University of Alaska Anchorage offers a graduate certificate in Education Leadership Principal that is available both online. It is designed for those who hold a master’s degree who are seeking advance preparation to become a principal. The online program requires students to meet with an instructor at pre-determined times each week. It requires 26 credits and courses may include Organizational Theory and Change, Politics, Law and Ethics in Leadership, School Resource Allocation and Management, as well as Instructional Leadership and Student Learning.
The Master of Education in Educational Leadership is available online and is designed for individuals seeking advanced preparation to become a school leader. The program provides knowledge in facilitating development, implementation, and monitoring of learning as well as how to shape, nurture and sustain a school culture. Students learn to ensure effective management of operations and resources so students have a safe, efficient and effective learning environment. Courses required may include Fundamentals of Research in Education, Organizational Theory and Change, School Resource Allocation and Management as well as Data-Informed Instruction and Decision-Making. Field experience is required for the program.
About University of Alaska Anchorage
In 1950, three leaders of the University of Alaska, Dr. Terris Moore, Elmer Rasmuson, and Earl Albrecht, campaigned to open a campus in the Anchorage area. The goal was to provide higher education to military bases as well as communities in the area. The first classes were offered on local military bases and in school district buildings.
In 1954 the Anchorage Community College opened on the second floor of what is now West High school. In 1960, the population of Anchorage had grown to the point additional programs needed to be offered at the school. A Master in Education and a Master in Engineering were added, becoming the first graduate degrees in Southcentral Alaska.
In 1968, construction began on a new campus which opened in 1970. That same year, the campus joined the University of Alaska as well as the Anchorage Senior College to form the University of Alaska Anchorage.
Today, the University of Alaska Anchorage is Alaska’s largest university, surrounded by both urban areas and the wild. There are satellite campuses in Homer, Kodiak, Soldotna, Valdez, and Mat-Su. The college offers associate, bachelors, master’s and doctorate degrees.

University of Alaska Anchorage Application Requirements
Applicants to the Associate in Applied Science in Early Childhood Education must provide official high school transcripts. SAT or ACT scores are not required for admission. Applicants who have earned more than 24 credits at another college or university must submit official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended but do not have to supply high school transcripts. Background checks are required for field experience and some schools may require a TB test before student teaching.
Applicants for the graduate certificate in Educational Leadership must hold a master’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university. They must have at least six credits in graduate-level educational research methodology and must hold valid certification as a teacher or special services provider. A current resume, educational goal statement and three letters of recommendation are required. A background check is required for field placement and applicants must provide official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended.
In order to apply for the Master of Education in Educational Leadership, the applicant must have three years of experience as a certified teacher and hold a valid teacher certificate. An educational goal statement and three letters of recommendation are also required along with transcripts from all colleges and universities attended and must hold a bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university. A background check is required for field placement.
University of Alaska Anchorage Tuition and Financial Aid
Undergraduate lower division course tuition is $223 per credit hour for residents and $789 per credit hour for non-residents. Upper-division courses for undergraduate residents is $269 per credit hour and $835 per credit hour for non-residents. Graduate tuition is $513 per credit hour for residents and $1,079 per credit hour for non-residents.
Financial aid is available to all students. In order to qualify, students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Financial aid packets may include grants or scholarships which do not need to be repaid. They may also include loans which must be paid after graduation. Students who attend on campus may be offered work-study programs. Graduate students who attend on campus may be offered fellowships or assistantships.
