About the University of Georgia
The University of Georgia is a large public university in Georgia that ranks as one of the state’s biggest campuses. Established in 1785, it took nearly two decades before its founders decided where to build the campus. They chose Athens because of its close proximity to other cities and for space the region provided for future growth. The university would close during the Civil War and reopen a few years later to educate the surviving soldiers of those battles.
According to U.S. News and World Report, the university is home to the 35th best education program in the country and is the 46th best university in the nation. Also known as Georgia and UGA, it ranks among the top colleges in the world and as one of the most affordable campuses too. UGA keeps its tuition rates low and offers different forms of financial aid for incoming students. That led to enrollment at Georgia reaching more than 38,000 students in recent years.
