About the University of Houston – Victoria
The University of Houston – Victoria is a branch of the University of Houston located in Victoria, Texas. People living in the city began calling for a new college in the early 1960s, but it took nearly a decade before the state responded and established a school there. Called the University of Houston Victoria Center, the state established the campus in 1971 and opened it to students two years later. Enrollment grew from 100 students in the first year to more than 1,000 by the end of the 1970s, which led to the school becoming the University of Houston – Victoria. It uses the name UHV name for short.
Up through the turn of the century, the university operated as a senior college and only offered classes for juniors and seniors and graduate students. This changed in 2008 when it received approval to change its curriculum and become a standard four-year university with traditional degree programs. That change led to enrollment at UHV increasing to more than 4,000 students. UHV now offers traditional and online degree programs as well as some three-year undergraduate programs.
