Education Degree Programs Offered by the University of North Texas

The College of Education at the University of North Texas offers programs designed for students who want to work as teachers anywhere in Texas and other states. Students can choose from programs for elementary, middle and secondary school education, but the university also offers a physical education program that prepares students for working as gym teachers and athletic coaches at all levels. In the elementary education program, students can take classes to work in positions as teachers of teaching English as a second language and other subject areas.
In the middle school education program, students can take core courses and learn how to teach multiple subjects or focus their studies on teaching just one content area. They’ll take courses that include Reading and Language Arts in EC-8, Human Development, Introduction to Early Childhood and Reading and Writing. Those who choose the secondary education route can choose from content areas that include chemistry, dance, computer science, history, speech, and journalism. They can also choose a second content area in German, art, theater, physical education, French or music. The university’s general physical education program features courses in kinesiology and athletic training.
The University of North Texas also offers several certification programs for those who want to work as teachers and school administrators. One program focuses on core subjects for early childhood education through students in the sixth grade. It includes an English as a second language teaching certificate too and with a certificate for bilingual teachers. An online program helps students get the certificates necessary to work as secondary school teachers too. The university also offers programs to help a student become a superintendent or a principal.
At the graduate level, students can choose from programs in counseling, instructional leadership, and school and district administration. The school counseling program includes Master of Education and Master of Arts tracks. Each one includes practicums also. The university’s administration programs allow students with teaching experience to use those skills as they transition into a leadership position. A Master of Education in Teaching includes certificate tracks for those who want to teach in secondary and other schools. They can focus on math, science, core content or bilingual education. The university also offers a graduate education program in curriculum and instruction.
About the University of North Texas
The University of North Texas is a public university often called UNT. Located in Denton, Texas, the university started as the Texas Normal College and Teacher Training Institute when it opened in 1890. It became the North Texas Normal College in 1904 but retained the focus it had on education programs. Many of the men and women who worked as teachers in and around Denton received their training from the college. Known as a teachers college, a state teachers college and then a state college, it became UNT in 1988 and now serves as the flagship campus in the UNT system. UNT now ranks as one of the nation’s best colleges, according to U.S. News and World Report, Washington Monthly and ARWU.
University of North Texas Accreditation Details
UNT has both regional accreditation and accreditation for its education programs. The accreditation for its education programs comes from the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). It also has accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), which the university renews every decade.
University of North Texas Application Requirements
UNT does not let students declare a major in any education subject as a freshman. Students need to take at least one semester of classes and maintain a high-grade point average. They can then meet with their advisors and declare a major as well as begin taking education classes. UNT offers guaranteed acceptance to incoming freshmen who meet one of several requirements:
- Graduate within the top 10% of their classes
- Have a minimum ACT/SAT score of 20/1030 and rank in the top 15 percent
- Rank in the top 50 percent and have an ACT/SAT score of 23/1130
Students will submit their test scores and high school transcripts as well as the UNT application. UNT may request that some students provide a personal statement and letters of recommendation. This usually occurs when the student has poor grades or low test scores.
Graduate students must first apply to the university’s graduate school. This requires that they have a GPA in the 3.0 range and that they submit an application, transcripts and a GRE score. Students accepted into the graduate school can then apply to one of the College of Education programs. They need to submit a separate application to that program and provide a writing sample, three letters of recommendation and a copy of their GRE scores. The final deadline for any of the university’s education programs is March 15. Most of these programs ask that students submit to a criminal background check too.
Tuition and Financial Aid
UNT undergrads pay a board tuition rate of $6,094 per year. In-state undergrads also pay $1,500 for their tuition, while nonresidents pay $14,000 each year. Students who live in Oklahoma qualify for a discount that brings their tuition to $3,000 per year. Many students also sign up for a UNT room and board package, which will cost an average of $9,610 per year. Graduate students can pay the same amount for a room and board package. They’ll also pay a tuition rate of $5,450 as a resident or $9,486 per year as a nonresident.
To help students afford their costs, UNT offers some waivers and exemptions. These programs cover the cost of the university’s application fee and some of the other fees that students face when they enroll. Four different types of scholarships are available for transfer and traditional college freshmen. UNT excellence scholarships give students up to $10,000 a year, while transfer students qualify for scholarships of up to $3,000 a year. Each department at the university awards scholarships to incoming students too. Those who use the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) can qualify for work-study on the UNT campus and get grants from the government and university as well as student loans. Education majors attending the University of North Texas can get financial aid packages that include department scholarships and multiple types of government aid.
