About the University of Texas-Tyler
The University of Texas-Tyler originated in 1971 when the Texas Legislature passed Rep. Billy Williamson’s bill to develop Tyler State College for a 14-county district. In 1973, President James Stewart Jr. welcomed an inaugural coed class of 176. In 1975, Governor Dolph Briscoe approved a name change to Texas Eastern University. Four years later, Governor William Clements Jr. acquired it for the blossoming University of Texas system. In 1981, UT Tyler invested $4.5 million to erect Robert R. Muntz Library. In 1990, the Joint Baccalaureate Studies Program was launched for 2+2 transfers. In 1997, the University of Texas-Tyler formed its first Master of Education major. In 1998, President Rodney Mabry admitted the earliest freshmen and sophomores. In 2000, UT Tyler began online courses through the TeleCampus. In 2013, Tyler established the Global Awareness Through Education (GATE) Program.

University of Texas-Tyler Accreditation Details
By January 1, 2020, the University of Texas-Tyler must submit a Quality Enhancement Plan to the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) to begin another 10-year Level VI accreditation reaffirmation under President Michael Tidwell, Ph.D., who earned the Golden Apple Professor of the Year Award. Located 697 miles east via Interstate 20 in Decatur, this superb 11-state Deep South Region accreditor is recognized by the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) to review Tyler’s 48 baccalaureate, 33 master’s, and four doctoral degrees. Further, the School of Education received approval from the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) on July 1, 2013. Teaching curricula is also accredited by the Texas Education Agency (TEA) for PreK-12 certification.
University of Texas-Tyler Application Requirements
Enrollment at the University of Texas-Tyler is classified “moderately difficult” by Peterson’s because 2,416 of the 3,086 Fall 2018 applicants were selected for 78 percent acceptance. First-year Patriots joining the School of Education must complete a qualifying high school, homeschooling, or GED program. Prerequisites include four English, four science, and four math units. The Class of 2022 presented an average cumulative GPA of 3.38. Mid-range admitted SAT scores were 1040-1230. The middle 50th percentile had ACT scores of 20-25. Standardized tests are optional for freshmen ranking in the top 10 percent. Transfers need GPAs above 2.0 during 30+ regionally accredited college credits. Foreign students must submit a minimum 79 TOEFL iBT score or equivalent. The Graduate School seeks M.Ed. cohorts with four-year bachelor’s degrees in education. Most Master of Education entrants already hold initial PreK-12 certification and passing TExES exam scores. Cumulative GPAs of 2.5 or better in the last 60 credits are mandatory.
The University of Texas-Tyler has rolling undergrad admission until August 26th for Fall, January 19th for Spring, and July 17th for Summer. International students must apply before May 31st, October 31st, and February 28th respectively. M.Ed. cohorts are welcome through August 12th, December 30th, and May 4th. The M.Ed. in Educational Administration is one exception closing on August 15th, December 20th, and April 15th. M.S.N. in Nursing Education majors must file before September 10th or March 15th. Tuition and Financial Aid
For 2019-20, the University of Texas-Tyler is billing in-state School of Education undergrads $1,500 state and $4,620 board tuition annually. Non-residents cover the $14,280 state and $4,830 board tuition each year. Mandatory student fees are $2,172 yearly. Living at the Smith County campus’ dorms like Ornelas Hall adds $9,502 for room and board. UT Tyler budgets $1,292 for books, $2,384 for transportation, and $1,724 for personal expenses. Annual bachelor’s attendance equals about $18,868 in-state and $32,098 out-of-state. The Graduate School charges full-time Texans $4,899 and non-residents $10,551 yearly. Studying part-time incurs $325 to $796 per credit. Online M.Ed. courses have a $14 distance education fee per credit.
According to the NCES College Navigator, the Enrollment Services Center in James H. Stewart Hall links 82 percent of incoming full-time UT Tyler Patriots to financial aid averaging $6,982 apiece for $2.76 million combined. University funds include the Academic Excellence Scholarship, Valedictorian Scholarship, Salutatorian Scholarship, Patriot Scholarship, Graduate Fellowship, Texas Tuition Promise Scholarship, Texas Tomorrow Fund Scholarship, Returning Student Scholarship, Teacher in Excellence Scholarship, College Employee Scholarship, Top 10 Percent Scholarship, and Alumni Legacy Scholarship. The Presidential Fellows Program covers full tuition for exemplary freshmen meeting the 29 ACT or 1350 SAT score minimum. The $2,000 Transfer Presidential Scholarship has a May 1st deadline for undergrads with 30+ previous credits and GPAs above 3.25. Federal resources, such as the Teach Grant or Graduate Plus Loan, require FAFSA applications coded 011163. Texans could also pursue the Public Educational Grant, Educational Opportunity Grant, Armed Services Scholarship, Horatio Alger Scholarship, Charles Butt Scholarship for Aspiring Teachers, and more.
