University of Toledo Education Programs

The University of Toledo and its Judith Herb College of Education offers programs for students seeking an associate, bachelor, master or doctorate degree. It also offers online and specialist programs and endorsements for current teachers. The university established Teach Toledo as a new program that would encourage students to study education at the college level. Students can earn an Associate of Arts in Urban Education and actually work with real students while in the program. They will spend two semesters working in a local school and take courses about working with kids in elementary through high school.
Undergrads can choose from five different degree programs designed to help them teach specific subjects to groups of a certain age. Its early childhood education program allows students to earn their generalist certificate, which will qualify them to work with kids between preschool and third grade. The middle childhood education program prepares students for working with kids in fourth through the ninth grade. Those in the multi-age education program can work with kids of all ages but they must choose an emphasis area in art, music or foreign language education. There is also a special education intervention specialist program available from the university.
The university also offers 12 programs at the graduate level and a program designed to help students get their teaching certificates after earning a degree in another field such as math or science. These programs are available online and on the Toledo campus. Students can earn a degree in administration and supervision, psychology, research and measurement, education theory and social foundations, curriculum and instruction, early childhood education, special education, higher education or science and education. Many of these programs offer different concentrations and specializations too. Also available are doctoral programs and endorsement programs for students who want to teach two or more subjects.
About the University of Toledo
The University of Toledo is a large public university located in the city of the same name in northwestern Ohio. Founded in 1872, it originally opened as a private school that offered practical training in different fields. Most of its graduates completed vocational training programs that helped them find jobs in some of Ohio’s top industries at the time. Called the Toledo University of Arts and Trades, it would later shut down. After the city took over the operations of the campus, it became the Toledo Manual Training School. This name would stick with it until it officially became the University of Toledo in the 1960s. That name change occurred in part because of the large numbers of veterans enrolling in its programs after World War II.
Also called U of Toledo and UT, the university now has 15 colleges operating on its campus. Some of these colleges offer programs for working adults and nontraditional learners, but other colleges offer more traditional programs in fields such as education and business. UT Online is the university’s virtual campus, which offers programs in many fields. U of Toledo is one of the state’s largest colleges with an enrollment of more than 23,000 students.
University of Toledo Accreditation Details
The most important accreditation that U of Toledo has that applies to its education programs comes from the National Council for Teacher Education (NCATE). This covers all its degree, certificate and licensure programs. Students will also find that the university has accreditation from the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCACS). As this is its regional accreditation, UT has the right to accept the credits that students want to transfer into an education program and allows the university to award financial aid packages.
University of Toledo Application Requirements
Any student who has a GED or a high school diploma can apply to the university’s Teach Toledo or one of its undergrad programs. Students coming directly from high school must have a grade point average of at least 2.0 and score of 740 or higher on the SAT. They can submit the online application and their transcripts. Once accepted into the university, students can then apply to the Teach Toledo program, which will require that they complete an interview and answer several questions. Those applying to an undergrad education program must meet the same requirements.
The College of Graduate Studies at UT requires that students have a bachelor’s degree before they apply or that they make satisfactory progress towards completing one of these degrees. Those applying to an education specialist program must also have a master’s degree. The degrees that students have should come from schools with regional accreditation. They should also have a GPA of at least 2.7 in all their undergrad courses, especially those in education and teaching. Depending on the program, students may need to show proof that they have a valid teaching license and submit a resume or letters of recommendation too.
Tuition and Financial Aid
The cost of attending UT starts at $8,534 per year for education majors who also live in Ohio. To qualify for the resident rate, students must have an in-state address and proof that they lived there for a full calendar year before applying. Nonresidents pay $17,900 per year. Undergrads also pay $11,400 a year for room and board on the Toledo campus. As the university has a tuition guarantee, it promises that it will not increase tuition for students over the next four years. Graduate students pay around $1,900 per class based on the university’s $550 per credit hour rate. They pay an extra fee of $25 per class for any online courses taken also.
Scholarships and grants are two examples of the free financial aid that U of Toledo awards to students, which is money that they get for school that they do not need to pay back. Students who score as low as 22 on the ACT or 1030 on the SAT and maintains a GPA of 2.75 qualifies for a $1,000 scholarship. The top students who scored 35 on the ACT or 1530 on the SAT and has a GPA of 3.8 will qualify for a $6,000 scholarship. U of Toledo offers scholarships in this same range for students with different grades and test scores. Any student who needs financial aid can also apply for a package via the FAFSA.
